Designed to accommodate a wide range of potential user objectives, 'rFIA' simplifies the estimation of forest variables from the FIA Database and allows all R users (experts and newcomers alike) to unlock the flexibility inherent to the Enhanced FIA design. Specifically, 'rFIA' improves accessibility to the spatial-temporal estimation capacity of the FIA Database by producing space-time indexed summaries of forest variables within user-defined population boundaries. Direct integration with other popular R packages (e.g., 'dplyr', 'tidyr', and 'sf') facilitates efficient space-time query and data summary, and supports common data representations and API design. The package implements design-based estimation procedures outlined by Bechtold & Patterson (2005) , and has been validated against estimates and sampling errors produced by FIA 'EVALIDator'. Current development is focused on the implementation of spatially-enabled model-assisted and model-based estimators to improve population, change, and ratio estimates. authors: - family-names: Doser given-names: Jeffrey email: jwdoser@ncsu.edu - family-names: Stanke given-names: Hunter - family-names: Finley given-names: Andrew preferred-citation: type: article title: 'rFIA: An R package for estimation of forest attributes with the US Forest Inventory and Analysis database' authors: - family-names: Stanke given-names: Hunter - family-names: Finley given-names: Andrew O - family-names: Weed given-names: Aaron S - family-names: Walters given-names: Brian F - family-names: Domke given-names: Grant M journal: Environmental Modelling & Software year: '2020' volume: '127' url: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envsoft.2020.104664 start: '104664' repository: https://doserjef.r-universe.dev repository-code: https://github.com/doserjef/rFIA commit: 5584e0f42031c6039eeb3d520ba6fafa8db40c7f url: https://www.doserlab.com/files/rFIA contact: - family-names: Doser given-names: Jeffrey email: jwdoser@ncsu.edu references: - type: manual title: 'rFIA: Estimation of Forest Variables using the FIA Database' authors: - family-names: Doser given-names: Jeffrey W - family-names: Stanke given-names: Hunter - family-names: Finley given-names: Andrew O year: '2025' notes: R package version 1.1.0 url: https://CRAN.R-project.org/package=rFIA
